Shiny Red Suit …

In December of 2010, the TL3 went to Columbus, Ohio, to play the annual Christmas show that our pals, the Beatdowns, stage every holiday season.

Prior to the show, my old friend and Beatdowns keyboardist Mark Wyatt told me that if we knew any Christmas songs we should play them. Feeling some pressure to deliver a little Yuletide cheer, I wracked my brain and realized that we didn’t know any Christmas songs. And it also occurred to me that it’d be easier to write one than to learn one.

Thus was born “Shiny Red Suit.”

We made the song up and put it together quickly (at two-and-a-half minutes, it takes roughly as long to listen to as it did to write). On the night of the show, we distributed lyric sheets to the crowd so they could sing along (I mean, c’mon it’s a Christmas song; that’s what you do, right?). Although we figured folks would just laugh and throw the words away, they actually really got into and sang along.

It was a lot of fun.

So recently (actually a week ago), we went into Dave Dewitt’s Shed 55 Studio in west Knoxville and recorded “Shiny Red Suit.” We got it all done in a coupla hours, except the sleigh bells, which I had to purchase the next day and Dave added later. And Dave was kind enough to knock out a stellar mix in just a few days time.

We did the basic track live and then Susan sang the lead vocal track. All three of us participated in the backing vocals and I overdubbed a coupla guitars, completely inspired by the clip from “The Making of ‘Never Mind the Bollocks’” on VH1 Classic the previous week (Steve Jones’ rhythm tracks are flawless). It was effortless and fun.

So here it is, free for your enjoyment.

Happy Christmas and a Merry New Year from the TL3 …

Tim
